The Guph (Hebrew גּוּף gūp̄, “body”), sometimes metaphorically called Otzar (Hebrew אוֹצָר ʾōṣār, “treasury”), is described in rabbinic literature as the Treasury of Souls. It is said to be located in the seventh heaven and to contain the souls of all human beings who have not yet been born.
This concept is based on the idea that God created all human souls at once. These souls are stored in the Guph and gradually unite with physical bodies at birth. Procreation helps bring the world closer to redemption by drawing down the remaining souls.
Mystically, the Guph symbolizes the idea that every human life is significant. Each birth emphasizing the spiritual importance of every individual.
According to a traditional saying, sparrows are able to see the souls as they descend from the Guph to enter the world.
